22 months Post-doc position at IFSTTAR (www.ifsttar.fr) – Public Research Institute

Computer Sciences, Wireless Telecommunication Systems

Possible starting date : 1/12/2016

Context

The European project SAFE4RAIL (SAFE architecture for Robust distributed Application Integration in roLling stock) will provide a holistic architectural approach for building the next generation of Train Control and Monitoring Systems (TCMS) based on wireless communication systems. This Research and Innovation action is part of the SHIFT2RAIL JU and answers to the S2R-OC-IP1-02-2016 call. SAFE4RAIL will investigates the baseline technologies and the capabilities required to create all the necessary preconditions for the development of a distributed integrated mixed-criticality embedded platform and architecture for rolling stock, which can host functions with the highest Safety Integrity Level (SIL) and integrate other less critical applications.

IFSTTAR is partner of this project and is participating to the Work Package 3, which aims to develop a distributed simulation and validation framework concept, for integrated modular architectures, in railways systems. IFSTTAR will contribute to the design and proof-of-concept implementation of simulation framework elements, for the validation of the TCMS interface to the ground, focusing on the simulation of T2G communication network. IFSTTAR will consider a discrete event network simulator such as OPNET to model a wireless network of existing technologies (focus on LTE) and the test applications. Some specific railway scenarios or use cases will be defined and implemented at physical layer (channel models) to model realistic environments. The impacts of various volunteer or not-volunteer impairments on the wireless link and on the T2G application will be evaluated. It will be also possible to consider external hardware system connected to the simulator prototype.

Mission

The 22 months post-doc position is open in the framework of the Safe4rail project which is 24 months. The work will consist in the development of the simulator platform, based on the discrete-event simulator, in cooperation with a team of DTU, involved in the project. The post-doc will be the main contact for IFSTTAR in the project: attending meetings and reporting on meetings. The research will be conducted at IFSTTAR Villeneuve d’Ascq (France) with frequent travels and stays at DTU in Danemark.

Required Competencies

–        PhD in Computer Science in relation with wireless communications networks Strong background in wireless networks, simulations using discreet event simulators. The knowledge of OPNET will be a plus ;

–        Good communication skills, verbal and written (in English)

–        Autonomy and initiative, experience on collaborative work

–        Writing reports for the project, Publication in conferences and journals
