POSTDOC position(s): Scaling IoT/5G networks

We are looking for Postdocs on resource allocation for 5G and IoT, especially focusing on uncoordinated and distributed networks. Two main strategies have been proposed to the large scale deployment of IoT networks: long range single-hop or short range multi-hop communications; however none seems to ensure the expectation of 5G in terms of devices’ density or reliability and latency. We are looking for postdocs to reinforce our research on those topics. Candidates can have:

  • a theoretical background; publications related to one or more of the following topics: information theory, probability and communication theory, copula, multiple access (NOMA), cooperative communications, machine learning, optimization;
  • or an experimental background to implement and test solutions for IoT, for instance using machine learning to improve decoding in LP-WANs.

Applicants are invited for 15 PhD positions (“Early Stage Researchers”, ESRs) to be funded by the Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network “MINTS – MIllimeter-wave NeTworking and Sensing for Beyond 5G” within the Horizon 2020 Programme of the European Commission.

MINTS provides a unique system-oriented training to 15 ESRs, nurturing a new generation of innovators thanks to internationally recognized researchers with broad experience in research, training, and participation in EU, national, and industry-sponsored projects. With the intensive involvement of industrial beneficiaries and partner organisations (Nokia, NEC, Sony, NI, IMEC, Proximus, Italtel), the ESRs will obtain in-depth knowledge and skills in mmWave networks and its key applications. This interdisciplinary and intersectoral training is an essential component of each ESR’s PhD. The 15 ESRs are distributed over 7 beneficiaries in 6 countries: KU Leuven (Belgium), IMDEA Networks Institute (Spain), TU Darmstadt (Germany), NEC (Germany), University of Padua (Italy), Lund University (Sweden), and Nokia Bell Labs (Ireland). Additionally, the consortium is completed by 7 partner organisations: IMEC (Belgium), Proximus (Belgium), NI (Germany), Carlos III University of Madrid (Spain), Italtel (Italy), Maynooth University (Ireland), and Sony (Sweden).

Each of the 15 ESRs will be working towards a PhD degree, supported by a carefully chosen supervisory team that maximizes both scientific excellence as well as interdisciplinary and intersectoral collaboration. The 15 MINTS ESRs will not only receive state-of-the-art science/technology training but will also benefit from a unique soft-skills training programme. The interdisciplinary and inter-domain training will make MINTS ESRs highly employable in various industries (such as the EU telecommunication vendors and operators Nokia, Eriksson, Deutsche Telekom, Telefonica, and Vodafone), academia, or public government bodies.

The URSI-France 2020 workshop, organized under the auspices of the French Academy of Sciences, will focus on “Future Networks: 5G and beyond”. The workshop will be held on the campus of Telecom Paris, Institut Polytechnique de Paris, in Palaiseau (France), from March 11 to March 13, 2020.
Given the commercial launch of the Fifth Generation of Mobile Radio Networks (5G) in 2020, URSI-France dedicates its annual workshop to such networks and to their future developments, as they are called to transform society in-depth through very innovative uses. With 5G, wireless networks will have been designed for the first time from the outset, with the aim to make possible person-person, personmachine and machine—to-machine communications, giving access to a multitude of services relying on data. The 5G-specific technological developments, the use of millimeter waves, the foreseeable developments that will require extending 5G with a follow-up generation, will continue to stimulate important efforts and new lines of research for both academia and industry. However, as each new generation introduces more complexity and service enrichment, it also raises concerns and fears stemming from the increased number of electromagnetic emission sources, the associated exposure and the energy consumption. It is therefore important to address these various issues in an altogether unbiased vision, at the core of the scientific approach.
In this context, the workshop will be organized around oral sessions and posters. Most sessions will be introduced by invited speakers, presenting the state of the art and / or recent developments, followed by papers that have been selected by the Scientific Committee.

Description: The Internet of Things has been identified as one of the most important technological evolutions in the 21st century. Small devices with onboard sensors and wireless communication technology, deployed in large numbers, provide unprecedented opportunities for monitoring and controlling homes, cities, and the environment. This high-speed long-range IoT however requires solutions with acceptable spectral efficiency, making optimal use of the available bandwidth for powering and uplink and downlink data transfer. Achieving spectral efficient communication typically comes at a cost, most often a power cost. In this project, innovative system level solutions will be proposed to achieve high throughput communication with zero power cost. This will be achieved by co-designing a massive MIMO basestation as source of downlink power and control data, and a backscattering node that is able to reflect sensor data back in-band, adjacent-band, and out-of-band. Depending on the mode of operation, a trade-off can be achieved between spectral efficiency and range in the system.

Profile: The applicant should have a Master Degree in Electronic Engineering and should meet the minimum eligibility criteria for a PhD at KU Leuven, namely having very good grades as well as mature mastering of English, both oral and in writing. The applicant should have a background in RF engineering. Experience with designing microwave circuits on printed-circuit-boards is a strong asset. The applicant should demonstrate interest in experimental work, such as proof-of-principle realizations, while also showing interest for team work with other PhD students in wireless networking.

The Institute for Technical Informatics at Graz University of Technology is looking for a motivated Ph.D. student to fill the open position as a University Assistant available from November 1, 2019 or later.

The successful candidate is expected to conduct highly-competitive research within the LEAD project “Dependability in the Internet of Things” and pursue a Ph.D. in the area of wirelessly-networked embedded systems. Specifically, the selected candidate will be working together with several Ph.D. students and senior researchers in the sub-project “Dependable Wireless Communication and Localization”.

We expect applicants to have interest in and/or prior experience with Cyber-Physical Systems and/or Internet of Things applications, as well as good knowledge in many of the following areas:

  • Ultrawideband and/or mmWave technology (physical and data link layer);
  • Media access control and routing protocols;
  • Distance estimation and location determination;
  • Resource-constrained embedded systems (both hardware and software);
  • C and MatLab programming;
  • Signal processing of radio signals.

Applicants must hold a Master degree (or equivalent) in computer engineering, computer science, or electrical engineering, and should have an excellent track record, maturity, self-motivation, as well as the ability to work both independently and in an interdisciplinary team. Experience in scientific projects, international cooperation and publication activities are considered an asset. Candidates should have very good command of the English language; knowledge of German is not required.

The 22nd International Symposium on Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications (WPMC 2019) will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, on November 24-27, 2019.
The theme of this year’s WPMC is “DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES AND BUSINESS TRANSFORMATION”, hosted by Instituto de Telecomunicas (IT)/Instituto Universitario de Lisboa (ISCTE-IUL), Portugal.

The WPMC symposia series were inaugurated in 1998, as a global platform to enable collaboration in the field of wireless information. Held in Asia, Europe and America, WPMC has established itself as a unique global conference dedicated to wireless multimedia convergence.

We are looking for candidates with MSc degree in electrical engineering or similar (including physics). The willingness to obtain the doctoral degree (Dr.-Ing.) while working with EMS is highly appreciated and will be supported.

METREACOM is a multi-university research unit (Forschungsgruppe). The research goal at TU Ilmenau is the design, calibration, and metrological evaluation of ultra-wideband directional sounding systems in the THz-frequency range from approx. 200…300 GHz. The system shell be applied to multipath propagation studies, THz radio link performance prediction, and testing of phased array radio interfaces.

We expect candidates with basic knowledge in RF and Communications. They should have advanced background in wireless propagation, parameter estimation, and signal processing as well as in RF system design. Some hands-on experience in millimeter wave/THz measurement would be welcome.

We expect excellent oral/written communication in English. We do not require a German language test degree. However, some knowledge of German would be preferable.

We are looking for candidates with MSc degree in electrical engineering or similar (including physics). The willingness to obtain the doctoral degree (Dr.-Ing.) while working with EMS is highly appreciated and will be supported.

The research goal is the design and experimental verification of high-resolution parameter estimation in the joint delay-Doppler-angular domain. Special focus is put on processing of wideband signals in dynamically changing environments, preferably in frequency bands around 30…40 GHz.

We expect candidates with basic knowledge in RF and Communications. They should have advanced background in wireless propagation, parameter estimation, and signal processing as well as in RF/mmW system design. Some hands-on experience in millimeter wave measurement would be welcome.
