Open PhD Position in THz P2P Communications – France

Context: 5G is expected to roll-out in a few years and is expected to introduce novel software and hardware solutions to integrate granular legacy and upcoming communication technologies within a single network architecture. Moreover, one of the key targets is to reach a ten-fold capacity increase with respect to 4G to improve the mobile broadband user experience or a lower latency to enable ultra-high reliable and robust communications for V2V applications for example. Two directions are currently considered to increase the capacity: adding spatial diversity (mandatory MIMO and optional massive MIMO) and new frequency bands. From this point of view, the 240 – 330 GHz frequency band is appealing due to the available bandwidth but key interdisciplinary technological issues at the frontier between optical and electronics (source and detection), signal processing, or even radio channel propagation must be individually and jointly tackled before mature commercial products reach the market. This scientific and technical expertise of these bricks has been emerging among the IEMN, PHLAM, and IRCICA laboratories at the University of Lille (France) with recent original results on the THz radio channel analysis as well as point-to-point indoor and outdoor communications.

Missions: The goal of this 3-year PhD program is to explore the feasibility of manipulating THz beams generated using multi-core photonics fibers and THz devices in arrays so as to multiplex information on several spatial channel (optical and THz) and go beyond the actual state-of-the-art. Such a project is then a good opportunity to transpose the current trend at the optical level (space-division multiplexing is a breakthrough technology for future optical communications) to the THz range. For instance, it aims at developing a comprehensive interdisciplinary framework between photonics and electronics to demonstrate beam steering/forming or multiplexing with optical-RF antenna arrays at THz frequencies for point-to-point communication applications with ultra high throughput, i.e. up to 100 Gbit/s capacity. The PhD student will work on MIMO signal processing aspects by building and validating first an optical-RF 2×2 MIMO communication chain. He will also study the feasibility and technological limits of dynamic beam steering/forming at the theoretical level with simulations. He will integrate and validate the optical (PhLAM) and electronics (IEMN) components. Finally, an optical-RF 7-antenna array setup will be developed and characterized in the lab to demonstrate the beam modifications and multiplexing capabilities. The PhD student will be co-advised by personnel from both the photonics (IRCICA: E. Andresen & L. Bigot) and electronics (IEMN: D. Gaillot & G. Ducournau) with the participation of 2 post-docs during the first year of the PhD program. Hence, the PhD thesis spans across the SMRE (Matter, radiation and environmental sciences) and SPI (Sciences for Engineering) doctoral schools.

THz Wireless communication, optical and/or electronics components and signal processing, knowledge of radio channel characterization and antenna beamforming techniques will be a plus.

Starting date: October 2019

New position for Research Engineer in Cognitive Radio – France

Research Engineer in Cognitive Radio

Context: This Research Engineer position, is offered in the context of SMARTIES project which is a project of the ELSAT2020*, that aims to develop a set of cognitive radio blocks (rational use of the spectrum, use of free-bands TV-white space, energy sobriety, resilience to evolutions and interference, etc.) adapted to the railway environment (both ground-train vital and non-vital communications).

Such radios are opportunistic or “aware” of their environment and able to control their influence on the environment and adapt their transmission / reception parameters according to this environment (coverage, interference, available bands, available systems and services). Our objective is to test a set of spectrum sensing and blind digital modulation & waveforms detection algorithms developed jointly between the IEMN-DOAE and IFSTTAR, by conducting in-lab tests firstly, and then performing embedded tests in the Lille Flanders station using a platform SDR (Software Define Radio) based on USRP RIO boards.

Missions: The work will consist in the implementation of a set of plectrum sensing and blind digital modulating & waveforms detection algorithms on a cognitive radio platform using 2 SDR NI USRP RIO boards available within the DOAE. A state of the art of these algorithms will be performed firstly. Then, the candidate will carry out operational tests in the laboratory. Thereafter, He will evaluate their performance in the railway environment using on-board measurements.

The candidate has to answer the following research missions:

  • Adapt a range of spectral sensing algorithms developed at the DOAE & IFSTTAR (i.e. PET, SPET and Beamforming) to high speed (i.e. railways)
  • Implement these algorithms on NI USRP RIO SDR boards
  • Perform operational tests in the laboratory
  • Evaluate their performance in the railway environment using on-board measurements
  • Evaluate the performance of a waveform blind detection algorithm, developed at DOAE, on SDR boards by conducting in-lab testes
  • Attending project meetings and workshops that will be organized by the OS4 of the CPER ELSAT.

Skills :

Wireless communications, signal processing, cognitive radio, signal processing, SDR, Matlab simulation, Labview, knowledge of Railway domain will be a plus.

Know-how : Autonomy, dynamism and reactivity, sense of initiative, good relationship, rigor, taste for hardware implementation
Date de recrutement souhaitée : April 2019

Iyad DAYOUB (IEMN/DOAE): iyad.dayoub@uphf.fr
Marion BERBINEAU (IFSTTAR): marion.berbineau@ifsttar.fr

Lieu de rattachement : IEMN DOAE (UMR 8520) – Université Polytechnique Hauts de France (UPHF), Valenciennes.
Gross monthly salary: 2645 €

* The ELSAT2020 project is co-financed by the European Union with the European Regional Development Fund, the French state and the Hauts de France Region Council

IRCICA – Postdoc and Engineer positions

Experimental Evaluation of Communications:
(1) Optical MIMO and (2) Railway communications

POSTDOC / Engineer – 12 months

Startas soon as possible; applications will be processed when they arrive but the opening will be closed by end of April
Place – IRCICA, USR 3380, Univ Lille – Lille, France
Required Skills – Experimental realization on test bench and, either Signal Processing and Digital Communications, MIMO techniques, either Optics / Experimental Photonics

For further details or to apply send your CV, a letter of motivation and references tolaurent.clavier@imt-lille-douai.fr

Context: IRCICA has a set of equipment dedicated to the generation and analysis of signals. We are aiming at developing these Telecom test benches for two specific use cases:

  • Transmission tests for any class of few-mode fibers; 4×4 MIMO processing is necessary, although widely used in wireless communication, it is not directly transferable to fiber communication and adaptation to the optical channel is essential.
  • Emulation of railway communication using a channel emulator in the loop for IP level assessment of the link quality.

Expected applications: We are looking for candidates knowing either optical communication or wireless communications and eager to apply their knowledge on experimental testbeds. A good understanding of the radio channel is expected. For the optical test bench, the candidate needs to be familiar with MIMO processing. For railway communications, the candidate is expected to be familiar with different wireless standards (at least WIFI, if possible GSM-air, 4G and 5G). Depending on the use case, knowledge in Matlab and/or Labview are expected.

Both positions can be opened for Postdocs or Engineers, the goal of the project will be adapted depending on the profile.
