Title: Tutorial, Massive MIMO: from theory to practice

When: June 1st, 9.00-13.00

Venue: Room E:2311, the E-Building of LTH, Lund University, Ole Römers väg 3, SE-223 63 Lund, Sweden

Currently, telecommunications providers face the challenge of increasing data rates while also expanding network capacity by orders of magnitude. Massive MIMO offer unique benefits that can address these concerns and enable 5G networks. To move Massive MIMO from theory to reality, however, advanced hardware must be combined with challenging signal processing.

In this tutorial, we give an overview of massive MIMO and the theory behind. We explain radio channel properties being important for massive MIMO operation and cover lessons learned from the implementation of the world’s first real time test bed for massive MIMO, the Lund University Massive MIMO testbed LuMaMi. With that, we also dive deep into the signal processing used, including reciprocity calibration, MIMO precoding, and MIMO decoding. Finally, we show the testbed in operation, with a number of simultaneous users using the same time-frequency resources for real time communication.

  • Fredrik Tufvesson received his Ph.D. in 2000 from Lund University in Sweden. After two years at a startup company, he joined the department of Electrical and Information Technology at Lund University, where he is now professor of radio systems. His main research interests are channel modelling, measurements and characterization for wireless communication, with applications in various areas such as massive MIMO, UWB, mm wave communication, distributed antenna systems, radio based positioning and vehicular communication.
  • Ove Edfors is Professor of Radio Systems at the Department of Electrical and Information Technology, Lund University, Sweden. His research interests include statistical signal processing and low complexity algorithms with applications in wireless communications. In the context of Massive MIMO, his main research focus is on how realistic propagation characteristics influence system performance and base-band processing complexity.

Title: Integrating the Internet of Things into 5G and Beyond Networks

When: Jan. 31, 2017, 2:00 PM – 5:30 PM

One of the challenges of 5G is how to integrate the Internet of Things (IoT) into the mobile network architecture, to offer services to the plethora of different IoT applications and to the massive number of machine-type devices that will populate the 5G scenario. The challenge is emphasized by the legacy architectures and network paradigms that have become a sort of de facto standard since some years, while new approaches are becoming more and more appealing. This tutorial will review the traditional network architectures used for wireless sensor networks, will discuss the role of new air interface specifically devised for IoT and will introduce some promising approaches that will be investigated in the next few years for 5G networks. The discussion on the evolution of IoT applications, including the role of mobile things, will be a transversal component of the tutorial.
