Motivation and Background

The demands for high data rates and ultra-reliable coverage become demanding issues due to increase number of population in the world by 2020. The huge demand for high quality life makes the administrator and the governments to put carefully planning in cities in a smarter way. As a premier agent for stimulating a quality of life compatible with a resource efficient economy, the smart city phenomenon has recently seized the imagination of the academia and the industry significantly. As the Internet of things (IoT) and Tactile Internet are predictable to be a primary driving force for future cities, advanced communication methods will play a crucial role in assisting real-time data acquisition and utilization from distributed sensors. However, smart cities will also have to function within the limitations of the national economy and available resources. Consequently, the challenges in the realization of smart cities are many and varied. In general, low energy consumption, constrained bandwidth, latency and budgetary limitations are predominate. In order to overcome these hurdles, it is essential that new ideas and theories for optimizing the network in energy, spectral, latency and monetary terms are presented to achieve a robust environment monitoring and sustainable transportation network, among other provisions. This led the researchers to pave the way for future wireless networks under the umbrella of 5G communications as well. This is an amalgamation of a multitude of technologies ranging from device-level algorithms such as low power transmissions to system-level architectures such as software-defined networking (SDN), the challenges posed by each of these techniques are critical. The smart city idea is also known to work at the intersection of various techniques such as device-to-device (D2D) communications, massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), millimeter wave (mmWave) communications, full-duplex transmissions and Internet of Things (IoT) to name a few. The aim of this workshop is to bring together a group of experts with interest in emerging smart cities related areas. The recent advancement in smart cities has boosted the development of a new generation of highly-efficient mobile networks. This workshop will highlight the recent developments in this evolving area. It will provide a platform for exchanging new ideas and research collaboration. Topic are not limited to the following areas:

– 5G oriented smart cities
– Big data and cloud computing in smart cities
– Internet of things and automation in smart cities
– Cognitive radio in smart cities, and ultra-dense network
– Energy harvesting technologies and communications
– Communication in smart grid and green communications and computing

TeamUp5G PhD student positions

PhD student positions from the recent MSCA Innovative Training Network TeamUp5G

(New RAN TEchniques for 5G UltrA-dense Mobile networks)

TeamUp5G (New RAN TEchniques for 5G UltrA-dense Mobile networks) is an MSCA ITN that has just started in 2019, whose focus is ultra-dense small cell systems, an important component in future heterogeneous 5G networks (commercial deployment in 2020) and beyond. TeamUp5G considers aspects such as enhanced multi-antenna techniques, efficient backhaul/fronthaul, massive MIMO, communications in the millimetre wavebands and visible light communications, as well as spectrum sharing and aggregation to enhance system capacity, decrease delay and energy consumption, and improve overall service quality.

The research team of 15 young researches supervised by committed experts from the industry and academia will advance the state of the art with the design of novel physical/link/medium access control algorithms and protocols to enhance capacity and user satisfaction, new dynamic spectrum management, opportunistic optimization of radio resources and cognitive radio techniques, together with self-organization capabilities, with different levels of collaboration, and techniques and methodologies to save energy. Both mobile broadband and IoT applications and traffic will be harmonized. The new developed techniques will be analyzed by simulation and prototyping and some show-cases (immersive video, drones) will be developed to illustrate the novelty and applicability of our ideas. The consortium will train the young researchers on how to contribute and will actively participate in the activities of standardization bodies.

Details on the fifteen PhD student positions from TeamUp5G (New RAN TEchniques for 5G UltrA-dense Mobile networks), leaded by Ana Garcia Armada from UC3M, are available at:

http://teamup5g.webs.tsc.uc3m.es/phd-positions/

We would like to receive applications from Early Stage Researchers who are envisaging to pursue a PhD and hold a Master degree in this field.

Subject description
The research area of this post doctoral position deals with Massive MIMO, a wireless communication technique gaining much attention, where massive number of antennas and transceiver chains makes possible large gains in spectral and energy efficiencies. Scaling up MIMO systems in this manner makes the entire construction less sensitive to the quality of individual transceiver chains and opens up for new system design principles. The research is performed in the context of a large joint research project with Ericsson AB, where we are investigating different aspects of massive MIMO technologies and applications. For more information on this cooperation see the Ericsson Research Blog (https://www.ericsson.com/research-blog/ericsson-goes-massive-lund-university/).

Detailed description of the work duties:

  • Research on Massive MIMO systems in general and associated scaling laws in particular.
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society

Subject description
Wireless connectivity in cars is no longer mainly about traditional infotainment. The use of wireless communication in vehicles is growing rapidly and is a key technology to increase road safety and efficiency. For accurate performance predictions, it is necessary to consider the whole system, including the influence of the surrounding environment, other vehicles, the networking stack and the application. V2X communication will rely on different underlying communication technologies. In order to make realistic assessment of the performance and study the complementary behavior of, e.g. 802.11p and LTE, and possibly C-V2X it is necessary to be able to make detailed and simultaneous simulation studies, including the whole network chain and proper temporal behavior.
In the project we will work with a simulation framework (based on OmNET++, SUMO, Veins, and Plexe) for system and application level simulations where detailed models of the environment and antenna arrangements are used, parts of the communication system that are vital but also very specific in vehicular environments. We will develop cluster based channel models based on realistic environment descriptions achieved from detailed map data. To complement existing models in the literature, especially when it comes to directional properties in the considered scenarios, we will perform directional channel measurements in some selected scenarios.

Work duties
The main duties involved in a post-doctoral posistion is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position shall include the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and Learning.
Detailed description of the work duties:

  • Research within the subject area, as described above. The work includes development of suitable channel models for system level simulations, work with the complete system level simulator including realistic mobility patterns, environment description, channel models and communication protocols. Planning, participation and evaluation of measurement campaigns for channel characterization.
  • Collaboration with industry; the project is a part of a larger joint project with the Swedish automotive industry and hence includes project meetings and joint project work.
  • Teaching at a undergraduate and graduate level, and supervision of degree projects and doctoral students, might be included.
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above.

Qualification requirements
